This year at Weir & Sons we are hosting our annual competition under the mistletoe where one lucky person can be in for the chance to win a voucher for €1,000 to spend in store. In honour of this, we have been lucky enough to share the story of 2017's winners with you!
The last few years we were delighted with the huge number of photo entries we received under the mistletoe outside of our flagship store on Grafton Street, it is always a tough competition with many memorable photos, however there was one photo that stole the show in 2017 which was posted by Susan Homan. We contacted her to get her story behind the photo and I can promise you now the story is just as cute as the photo.
Ken and Susan met when they were teenagers in youth organisations, they’d go down to the pier in Dun Laoghaire with friends after their bible study meetings and that’s where Ken first asked Susan if he could give her a lift home. From then on, the two would go out on Saturday nights to the church dances, where mothers would also be in attendance. These would start at 8pm and finish promptly at 11pm as everyone would have to be up early the next morning for Sunday Mass.
In 1955 they got married and moved in to their first home together after 5 years of dating. In the years that followed they had twin girls- Hilary and Shirley, who were then followed by their son Steven. They were later happily surprised with another daughter, Aisling.
On the day that the photo was taken under the mistletoe, Ken and Susan were in town with their daughter Hilary and granddaughter Louise, when Louise spotted the leaflet in store for the competition. They then decided to give it a go but Susan had doubts of their ability to win, thinking only a young couple would win. They were thrilled when they found out that they’d been the lucky ones to have won! When asked how they’d spent their winnings, we found out that they still have some of the prize money left but the couple have been sharing their winnings with their loved ones. Ken is a watchmaker by trade and used some of his share to treat himself to a lovely Seiko watch. Hearing that a skilled horologist such as Ken enjoyed Seiko’s as much as we do was a delight!
In March they will be celebrating 65 years of marriage so we asked them if they had any advice for today’s generation looking to enjoy a long and happy marriage. Some of their pearls of wisdom were:
~ Don’t hold grudges ~
~ Have a listening ear ~
~ Don’t rush into things ~
~ Don’t put up with family arguments ~
~ Be good pals and have a sense of humour ~
~ If / when children arrive, don’t expect your children to be at your beck and call once they become adults - They need to go out and make their own independent decisions ~
