GUCCI Play Watch | Interchangeable Bezel

GUCCI Play Watch | Interchangeable Bezel Watch

Gucci reintroduces its cult-classic interchangeable bezel watch from the 1980s, updated with contemporary enhancements. The Gucci Play revives the Maison’s iconic ladies’ timepiece, a bangle watch originally launched in the 1980s and distinguished by its set of interchangeable bezels. Over time, the watch has attained cult status, and its return is aptly timed to align with the current enthusiasm for shaped watches. This modern reinterpretation incorporates ceramic bezels, a larger watch head, and a more robust construction, offering a refined balance between heritage and modernity.

However, this is far from a direct, one-to-one revival. Gucci has meaningfully enhanced the watch’s overall quality, introducing a number of modern refinements. Chief among these are the interchangeable bezels: while the new Gucci Play is supplied with six options, they are now crafted from ceramic, offering significantly greater durability and scratch resistance than those of the original model. This upgrade is particularly compelling given that the watch is likely to be worn stacked with other bangles or bracelets. The bezels are offered in seven colourways, green, red, pink, white, black, and navy, alongside a bicolour version in Gucci’s signature green-and-red combination.

The original model’s bangle was notably lightweight and somewhat insubstantial. While it remains crafted from gold-plated stainless steel, the updated version is significantly thicker, with a more robust clasp to match. The watch head has also been modestly increased to 28mm in diameter. Although it retains an elegant, understated profile, the overall construction now feels far more assured, complemented by an improved water-resistance rating of 50 metres. The packaging is equally considered. The watch is presented in a lacquered spherical case finished in Gucci’s signature green and red, with a suede-lined interior that neatly houses the watch and its interchangeable bezels.
