According to legend St. Patrick famously taught Christianity to the people of Ireland using the shamrock, whose three leaves represent the Holy Trinity. Throughout the years it has had many meanings but in modern Ireland, it is the most popular Celtic symbol to show love and devotion. It is also known as the ‘Lovers Knot’.
The Claddagh ring is another Celtic symbol of love, also of friendship and loyalty. The heart is the centre feature of the ring, it symbolises love. The crown traditionally symbolises royalty however in the case of a Claddagh ring it symbolises loyalty. The hands that hold the heart and the above crown represent friendship. ‘With these hands, I give you my heart, and I crown it with my love’.
