Weir & Sons Celebrate 150 Years with Patek Philippe Collaboration
For 150 years Weir & Sons have been trading in luxury goods such as watches, jewellery and silver. Since it's founding in 1869 by Thomas Weir, the company has developed and changed along with the times. To celebrate reaching such a monumental milestone, Weir and Sons had the pleasure of collaborating with master watchmakers Patek Philippe to commemorate the event.
Patek Philippe is one of the highest regarded Swiss watchmakers in the world. Founded in 1839, the brand is known for its dedication to perfecting the art of horology. Patek Phillipe, being a family owned brand, maintain complete creative control over the design of each of their watches. While it is unusual for the brand to design a bespoke watch for one of their retailers, the collaboration with Weir & Sons was an exception they were excited and willing to make.
“They are simply one of the best watchmakers in the world,” says Chris, “and the Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5905P is a remarkable timepiece.” - Chris Andrews, Director at Weir & Sons
The Patek Philippe 5905P-014
Patek Philippe has 180 years of experience in its industry and like Weir & Sons, is family run. Over 50 years ago, Patek Philippe and Weirs established a relationship which made them a natural choice to help commemorate this momentous event. Out of this collaboration was born the beautiful, green 5905P-014: An exquisite timepiece that is handmade in the home of Swiss watchmaking.
An integral part of the designing of the new watch was the colour. The vibrant green that was chosen by Weir & Sons, not only represents a proud Irish background but also dates back to one of the early Weir boxes. The vibrant green on the dial is matched with a signature alligator strap. The case is made from pure platinum which is crafted in house. Featuring a renowned self-winding calibre CH 28-520 QA 42H, the power reserve has a minimum of 45 hours. This watch is able to maintain accuracy throughout the year, only needing to be adjusted between February and March. The watches are also stamped with the Patek Philippe Seal. Furthermore, this is the brand's way of ensuring that the highest standards of Swiss watchmaking are met. To receive this Hallmark the watch must meet all the quality criteria set by Patek Philippe.
The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5905P is a remarkable timepiece. Both internally and externally the 5905P is nothing short of a masterpiece. The back of this piece has sapphire crystal glass which showcases the movement. It is also engraved with the Weir & Sons logo and the anniversary year to mark the occasion. This special edition 5905P-014 retails at €90,500.
The Unveiling of the Watch
The watch was unveiled on the 11th of April at a Gala event hosted by Weir & Sons and Patek Philippe to celebrate the landmark year. In order to showcase and unveil such a unique and special watch to both us and Patek Philippe, it was necessary to have a perfect atmosphere. The evening was held in the Mansion House, on Dawson Street Dublin. A selection of watches was specially flown in from the Baselworld 2019 collection for an added exhibition on the night. Patek Philippe guests were invited to an elegant event to celebrate 150 years of Weir & Sons and to view the new limited edition watch. Speeches were made by both David Andrews, MD of Weir & Sons and Thierry Stern, President of Patek Phillipe, to speak about the milestone event. Weir & Sons Patek Phillipe experts were also in attendance to demonstrate to explain features of the watches to guests on the evening.
