Hallmarking the first piece of 2019 at Dublin Castle

This year at Weir & Sons we are celebrating our 150th year of business, in order to commemorate this memorable year we commissioned a special edition silver plate, which was the first piece of 2019 to be hallmarked by the Dublin Assay Office at Dublin Castle. The plate is one of the collectors series, with our landmark Grafton Street store as the centre focal point of the piece in silver gilt.  This Irish silver commemorative plate will be available in 3 sizes - 10 inch, 12 inch and 18 inch diameter (price upon request).

The Assay Office was first established in 1637 in Dublin to supervise the hallmarking of each piece of gold and silver throughout Ireland. The hallmarking of items by the Dublin Assay office is an assurance of the type of precious metal of any jewellery or silverware. Any piece to go through the office will be tested before being stamped with the correct hallmark. The process of hallmarking is still mainly done with a stamp using a series of strikes, however, there is an increase in the use of laser hallmarking.

For this memorable occasion family members went to view the historic moment and have a tour of the Office. They also had their photo taken in the grounds of Dublin castle to mark the occasion.

There are even more exciting things to come from Weir & Sons this coming year to mark the sesquicentennial year for the business, with collaborations with Irish jewellery designers on bespoke limited edition pieces.
